these are from seperate vinyl eps of limited release (1000 copies) of the same name but differing content and released on different labels (anticon and tomlab), so you better get scouring the shops if you ever want to hear this the way it's ment to be.. in full lossless vinyl glory. and trust me, you definitely do.
i really liked the convergence of my alternate tastes of xiu xiu and boc comming together in support of what was to me unknown artists why?. these had me written all over 'em. good vinyl, go buy it if you can find it. :)
meh, I'm tired... more tunes to come whenever the insomnia takes hold again...

Notes: A poor-quality bootleg taken from MP3 source and mislabeled (wrong sides) but hey, it's still old BoC on new vinyl. A1 - From 'Mask 200', A2 - From 'A Few Old Tunes', B1 - From 'Mask 500', B2 - From 'Mask 100'.
Label: Warp Records
Catalog#: WAP 144 CD
Format: CD, EP
Country: UK
Released: 17 Nov 2000
Genre: Electronic
Style: IDM, Ambient
Notes: Sadly, I do not own this on vinyl, so this is from the CD release. Images ripped from Discogs, per the usual. Converted from my FLACs this morning just for you, I hope you listen and enjoy. As others have said, this release is often over-looked among BoC's catalogue, and Amo Bishop Roden is really one of their best tracks. But then again, Zoetrope is one of their worst too... :/
A great deal of conjecture has been tossed about in relation to this album's samples and subject matter. References to David Koresh and the Branch Davidians are imbedded throughout this work, including a picture of Koresh in the inlay; and the title itself is part of the Davidian linguistic ("Picture yourself in a beautiful place out in the country."). I am left to wonder about the "beauty" of Koresh's place out in the country, however, given all the CNN-laced memories of the events that happened on that little ranch in Waco, Texas.

From the Pitchfork Interview:
Pitchfork: When did you live in Canada?
Mike: From 1979 to 1980. I was eight years old and Marcus was a bit younger. Our father worked in construction. He helped to build the Saddle Dome in Calgary. There was a lot of work at that time in Canada so that's why we moved there. We moved around quite a lot and then relocated to Scotland. We've been based around Edinburgh for the last 20 years, so this is home.
Pitchfork: Why did the educational TV films from the National Film Board of Canada, that you named yourself after, have such a big impact on you and your music if you'd only been exposed to them for a year?
Marcus: We saw them in both Canada and Scotland. The films were on television in the UK for years. For a long time we weren't sure what [the NFBC] would think about a band being named after them. Only recently did we find out that they had used our music on some of their films. So we took that as approval.
Mike: They have a newsletter and even ran an article on us a couple of years ago. So that's a strange feedback loop.
Dig the audio cassette release:
Personal note: Con, I don't know if I never thanked you for that postcard, the one from Japan in '98 that reccomended picking up this disc, but damn do I owe you for that. This album, man, this album saved my life. Love it, still and always. Thanks 'mate.
| Stolen from Discogs: "I don't suppose it would be any less disappointing if this "Peel Session" had been billed as a "Peel Session Excerpt," but at least there would be truth in advertising; only two of the four tracks from the session are actually included. The broadcast version of "Happy Cycling" is replaced by an already-released version, and the track "XYZ" is omitted. The two tracks from the session that are included ("Aquarius" and "Olson") are probably worth the price of admission for fans since they are uniquely tweaked and classic tangents of the better-known versions. It's hard to not feel cheated, however, when you discover that the disc only delivers half of the broadcast session." |
